Repairs

While the basement is opened for repairs, what improvements could reduce damage from another flood?

Start with why water entered, then ask your contractor and local building or floodplain officials about appropriate drainage, protection of vulnerable equipment and more flood-resistant wall and floor assemblies. Illinois DNR's existing-building guidance treats these as site-specific measures; changing finishes alone does not stop flooding. Request separate prices for necessary restoration and optional improvements, and check required permits before rebuilding. Materials marketed as water-resistant are not a promise that the entire room, its contents or concealed layers will escape damage.
