Urgency

Can I run a generator in an open garage or shed to power the sump or drying equipment?

No. An open door or window does not make an enclosed or partly enclosed space safe for a fuel-powered generator. CDC says to operate these engines outdoors, at least 20 feet from doors, windows and vents. Carbon monoxide can build up without a warning smell. Ask the utility or a qualified electrician about a safe power arrangement; never improvise a connection into the home's wiring.
