Costs and insurance

The repair contractor's estimate is higher than the insurer's. How should I compare them?

Compare the detailed scopes before the totals: rooms, quantities, materials, demolition, rebuilding, permits and any hidden damage. Ask both parties to explain omissions or different assumptions. Send supporting photographs and the contractor's itemized estimate to the adjuster for review; a gap does not by itself show that either party is wrong. Illinois DOI advises first trying to resolve repair-cost differences with the insurer, then contacting the department if the insurance dispute remains unresolved.
