Floods and sewage

After flooding or a sewage spill nearby, is tap water safe for drinking, washing dishes and bathing?

Check the current instructions from your water utility and local health department; a nearby spill alone does not tell you the condition of your supply. Do not use water suspected or known to be contaminated for food, dishes or personal hygiene. A flooded private well needs its own assessment and testing; CDC recommends a well or pump contractor for disinfection work. Use a known safe supply while safety is uncertain. Boiling does not make fuel- or toxic-chemical-contaminated water safe.
